University of San Diego Graduation Photographer

USD’s Spanish Renaissance campus is one of the most visually stunning university settings in Southern California and it is criminally underrated for graduation portraits. The white stucco architecture, the blue-domed Immaculata church, colonnaded walkways, and panoramic views of Mission Bay create a backdrop that is completely unique among San Diego universities.

I shoot USD graduation sessions during both fall and spring semesters. Every time I arrive on this campus I am reminded why it is one of the most underrated graduation portrait locations in the region.

Where We Shoot at USD

The Immaculata Church is the crown jewel of USD’s campus. The steps leading up to the church with its iconic blue dome create one of the most striking graduation portrait locations in all of San Diego. This is a must-stop for every USD session — the combination of the dome, the surrounding architecture, and the scale of the building creates portraits that feel almost European.

Colonnaded walkways throughout campus give us a classic, elegant architectural feel that complements any outfit and creates beautifully framed, gallery-worthy portraits.

Mission Bay overlook offers panoramic views of Mission Bay and the wider San Diego skyline. On a clear day this is one of the most breathtaking portrait locations in the city — the kind of shot that graduates print large and put on their wall.

Campus garden and courtyard areas provide quieter, more intimate settings with beautiful landscaping, mature trees, and soft natural light for a completely different mood within a single session.

Mission Beach or Old Town San Diego are easy add-ons for graduates who want to bring the wider San Diego spirit into their session. Mission Beach is 15 minutes away and adds the Southern California coastline to your gallery.

When to Book Your USD Graduation Session

USD graduation sessions are available fall and spring. Reach out at least 4 to 6 weeks before your graduation date to secure your spot. Spring dates at USD fill quickly, especially in May around the Commencement ceremony.

What to Expect

Sessions are relaxed, fully guided, and planned around you. We typically move through 2 to 4 locations and I handle all posing direction so you feel comfortable the entire time. A sneak peek lands in your inbox that same evening. Galleries are delivered within one week through a private online gallery for downloading, sharing, and ordering prints.

What to Wear for USD Graduation Photos

USD’s white stucco and blue dome architecture is a forgiving backdrop for almost any color palette. Deep jewel tones, soft neutrals, and classic navy all photograph beautifully here. Most graduates do 2 to 3 outfits plus their regalia. I send a full prep guide before every session.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes USD different from other San Diego campuses for graduation photos?
The architecture. No other campus in San Diego has the Spanish Renaissance style, the blue-domed church, or the Mission Bay overlook that USD has. It is the most distinctive and elegant campus backdrop in the city, and it photographs unlike anywhere else.

Can I add a beach location to my USD graduation session?
Yes — Mission Beach and Pacific Beach are both about 15 minutes from USD and make excellent add-ons. Old Town San Diego is also close by and offers a completely different urban feel. I can build the right combination based on what you want your gallery to look like.

How long is a USD graduation session?
Campus-only sessions run about 1 to 1.5 hours covering 2 to 3 locations on campus. If we add a beach or off-campus location, plan for 2 to 3 hours total.

How much does a USD graduation session cost?
Full pricing is on my pricing page. Sessions include professional editing, multiple locations, and a private online gallery.

How soon will I receive my USD graduation photos?
Your complete edited gallery is delivered within 1 week of your session. You receive a private online link to download, share, and order prints.

Do you offer cap and gown portraits at USD?
Yes, and the Immaculata steps with cap and gown is one of my favorite photos to make at USD. It is the image every Torero graduate should have.
