Geisel Library is one of the most iconic graduation portrait locations in the country, and shooting at UC San Diego is one of my favorite things about working in Southern California. The dramatic brutalist architecture on campus and the stunning La Jolla coastline just minutes away give us two completely different worlds in a single session.
I shoot UCSD graduation sessions during both fall and spring semesters. The campus never gets old — there is always a new angle to work with at Geisel, and the light at La Jolla Cove in the late afternoon is something graduates remember for years.
Where We Shoot at UCSD
Geisel Library is the centerpiece of every UCSD graduation session. Named after Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss), the building’s striking architecture creates portraits unlike anything else. We typically shoot from multiple angles to capture the full scale of the building, including the signature colonnade shots that every UCSD grad should have.
Warren Mall is the main artery of campus and gives us open space, mature trees, and a sense of the full university. Great for movement shots and natural poses.
Sun God Statue is the most recognized piece of UCSD’s Stuart Collection and a must-stop for graduates who want something distinctly UCSD. The surrounding open plaza photographs well at any time of day.
Scripps Institution of Oceanography pier adds a coastal San Diego element that perfectly complements the campus shots. The pier columns, the beach, and the open ocean create a completely different mood that makes your gallery feel complete.
La Jolla Cove is 10 minutes from campus and one of the most stunning coastal locations in Southern California. Rocky shoreline, turquoise water, and cliffs that catch the late afternoon light beautifully. This is the most popular beach add-on for UCSD graduation sessions.
La Jolla Shores offers a wider, more open beach alternative to the Cove — great for a different coastal mood, especially for sunset sessions.
When to Book Your UCSD Graduation Session
UCSD graduation sessions are available fall and spring. Spring books up fast — reach out at least 4 to 6 weeks before your graduation date. UCSD’s June ceremony is one of the busiest weeks of my year, so May and early June dates fill first. Do not wait until after the ceremony date is announced.
What to Expect
Sessions are relaxed, fun, and fully guided from start to finish. We move through 2 to 4 locations and I handle all posing so you feel comfortable the entire time. A sneak peek lands in your inbox the same evening. Galleries are delivered within one week through a private online gallery for downloading, sharing, and ordering prints.
What to Wear for UCSD Graduation Photos
For campus portraits at Geisel, deep blues, navy, and earth tones contrast beautifully against the concrete architecture. For La Jolla beach add-ons, flowy dresses, linen separates, and lighter fabrics move well in the coastal breeze. Most graduates do 2 to 3 outfits. I send a full prep guide before every session.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I do Geisel Library AND La Jolla Cove in the same session?
Yes, and this is one of my most popular UCSD session formats. We start at Geisel for the campus portraits, then drive 10 minutes to La Jolla Cove for the coastal portion. The campus-plus-coast combination gives your gallery a range that neither location alone can match.
How long does a UCSD graduation session take?
Campus-only sessions run about 1 to 1.5 hours. If we add La Jolla Cove or another beach location, plan for 2 to 3 hours total including travel time between locations.
What time of day is best for photos at Geisel Library?
The golden hour window about an hour before sunset is stunning at Geisel — the warm light hits the concrete and creates incredible depth. Morning sessions also work well, especially if you want the campus quieter. I will recommend a time based on the season when we book.
How much does a UCSD graduation session cost?
