Grand Canyon University Graduation Photographer
Grand Canyon University’s northwest Phoenix campus has a visual energy that is completely its own. The purple and gold color scheme runs through everything — from the buildings and signage to the landscaping — and that consistency creates a graduation portrait backdrop that is vibrant, bold, and unmistakably GCU.
I shoot Grand Canyon University graduation sessions during both fall and spring semesters. Phoenix’s desert light, especially in the late afternoon, creates stunning conditions for outdoor campus portraits.
Where We Shoot at GCU
GCU Arena is the most recognizable structure on campus and the center of GCU’s identity. The arena’s exterior, signage, and surrounding plaza create a bold, instantly recognizable GCU backdrop that works especially well for cap and gown portraits.
The Grove and central campus plazas offer wide open space with GCU’s signature purple branding throughout. The landscaping is well maintained and photographs cleanly in any season.
Academic buildings and signage throughout campus give us options for graduates who want something more architectural and less arena-focused. The mix of modern construction and desert landscaping provides more visual variety than you might expect.
Surrounding Phoenix desert and Dreamy Draw Park are excellent add-ons for graduates who want the rugged Arizona desert landscape in their session. The Sonoran Desert light at golden hour — saguaro cacti, red rocks, wide open sky — creates portraits that could only happen in Arizona.
Downtown Phoenix or Scottsdale are both within 20 to 30 minutes of GCU and offer urban backdrops for graduates who want something with a city feel alongside their campus portraits.
When to Book Your GCU Graduation Session
GCU graduation sessions are available fall and spring. GCU has a large graduating class and spring ceremony season fills my schedule quickly — reach out at least 4 to 6 weeks before your graduation date. The earlier you contact me, the better your pick of dates and times of day.
What to Expect
Sessions are relaxed, fully guided, and planned around you from start to finish. We move through 2 to 4 locations and I handle all posing direction so you never have to guess what to do with your hands or where to look. A sneak peek lands in your inbox that same evening. Your complete edited gallery is delivered within one week through a private online gallery for downloading, sharing, and ordering prints.
What to Wear for GCU Graduation Photos
GCU’s purple and gold palette is striking and photographs boldly — if you want that front and center, your regalia does all the work. For personal outfits, earth tones, deep navy, burgundy, and warm neutrals photograph beautifully against GCU’s landscaping and the Arizona sky. Most graduates bring 2 to 3 outfits plus their cap and gown. I send a full prep guide before every session covering exactly what to bring and how to prepare.
Frequently Asked Questions
What time of day is best for GCU graduation photos in Phoenix?
Phoenix heat is real. For spring and summer sessions, I recommend early morning (7 to 9am) for the most comfortable conditions and clean morning light. For fall sessions, late afternoon and golden hour are spectacular — the Arizona desert light in October and November is some of the best I shoot in all year.
Can I add a desert location to my GCU session?
Yes — and this is one of my favorite things to offer Phoenix-area graduates. The Sonoran Desert, South Mountain Park, or areas around Cave Creek and Scottsdale give you a backdrop that is purely Arizona and makes your graduation gallery feel genuinely distinct from any California school.
How long is a GCU graduation session?
Campus-only sessions run about 1 to 1.5 hours covering 2 to 3 locations on or near campus. Adding a desert or off-campus location extends the session to 2 to 3 hours total depending on travel time.
How much does a GCU graduation session cost?
Full pricing is on my pricing page. Sessions include professional editing, multiple locations, and a private online gallery.
How soon will I receive my GCU graduation photos?
Your edited gallery is delivered within 1 week of your session. You receive a private online link to download, share, and order prints.
Do you photograph other Phoenix-area campuses beyond GCU?
Yes. If you are graduating from Arizona State University’s Downtown Phoenix or Polytechnic campuses, or from another Phoenix-area school, reach out. I travel throughout the Phoenix metro regularly and can build a session around your campus and your preferred Arizona locations.
